From Washington, this is VOA news. I'm David DeForest reporting. The leading suspect in the Paris terrorist attacks appears in court[出庭].
Salah Abdeslam entered the courthouse[法院] in the French capital just hours after his extradition[1] from Belgium[比利时].
The 26-year-old Frenchman who lived in Brussels had been on the run[2] since the November 13 Paris attacks. He was caught just days before the March 22 Brussels attack.
The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for both.
Iraqi forces renewed their offensive[进攻] toward the Islamic State stronghold[3] of Mosul[摩苏尔(伊拉克北部城市)] on Wednesday. They are pushing their way into villages on the southeastern outskirts[市郊,郊区] of the city under cover of heavy airstrikes[猛烈的空袭].
By midday[中午;正午], troops had moved into the village of Mahana.
The offensive had stalled[4] for several weeks after Iraqi forces met stiff resistance[5] from Islamic State fighters.
The United States is urging Ukraine to start jailing corrupt officials after months of political turmoil[6].
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Victoria Nuland[7] said in Kyiv[基辅/乌克兰首都=Kiev] Wednesday she was encouraged by the government's commitment to reform.
"Overall, I go home encouraged by the commitment of all the political forces to continuing and accelerating reform, economic reform, anti-corruption reform, in particular judicial reform[8]." :Victoria Nuland.
A former U.S. ambassador to NATO[北大西洋公约组织North Atlantic Treaty Organization] says the alliance should actively counter Russian claims that NATO's expansion threatens Russia[9].
Former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Kurt Volker says the Kremlin[克里姆林宫] is continually pressing this narrative[10] against the West, claiming that NATO broke its promises to[11] Russia.
Volker says if NATO lets the narrative stand without a rebuttal[反驳;辩驳;反证], it will give the impression that Russia's narrative has merit.
